How Did This Woman Climb the Statue of Liberty?

(CNN) - A woman who was part of a group of protesters climbed up to the robes of the Statue of Liberty Wednesday and declared that she won't come down until "all the children are released", a source with the New York Police Department told CNN.

A woman identified as Therese Patricia Okoumou scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July to protest President Donald Trump's controversial policy that tore migrant children from their parents at the US border.

More than two hours after she was first spotted, the NYPD ESU officers, wearing harnesses, grabbed her as she was putting on her sneakers. But the group says no one else was aware she would climb the base.

ICE officers arrest and deport immigrants who are in the United States illegally.

An activist group called Rise and Resist said on Facebook that Okoumou was part of a Fourth of July protest at the base of the statue against immigration policy.

Regardless, he said he believed the publicity gained from the stunt would help the group's cause.

"She is refusing to co-operate and our efforts to engage her are ongoing at this minute", Sgt. David Somma, a spokesman for the National Park Service, told Reuters. You know, I explained to her that we want you to come down, that would be the best way. "People have the right to speak out".

For tourists visiting the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday, the 4th of July was a bit more colorful than expected.

The climber ascended from the observation point, Willis said.

The incident forced authorities to evacuate Liberty Island on a sweltering holiday afternoon when thousands usually visit the statue, a symbol of American freedom that has stood in the New York Harbor since 1886.

At least six other people were taken into custody after unfurling a banner that read "Abolish I.C.E.", in reference to the agency whose officers arrest and deport immigrants who are in the US illegally, among other duties. In a statement (which some believed seemed like the org was distancing itself from Therese), it said, "In solidarity with Saturday's nationwide End Family Separation protests, on July 4th, Rise and Resist planned and executed a non-violent banner drop and human banner action at the Statue of Liberty".

Okoumou allegedly "staged a risky stunt that alarmed the public and endangered her own life and the lives of the (New York Police Department) officers who responded to the scene", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

Under Trump's zero-tolerance policy, the government has begun requiring border agents to arrest and prosecute anyone caught entering the country illegally.

As a result of the crackdown, distraught children were separated from their families and, according to widely broadcast pictures, held in chain-link enclosures.
