System in Caribbean has 70 percent chance of tropical development

A system in the Atlantic has quickly developed into the second tropical storm of the 2018 hurricane season.

According to data, the storm is located at 10.2 N, 41.4 W with winds at approximately 35 miles per hour.

Tropical Depression Two, in the lower right of this GOES-16 satellite image, is moving west toward the Caribbean.

The weak storm, which carries winds of 40mph according to the National Hurricane Centre, is expected to die down before it reaches the Lesser Antilles islands.

The Caribbean should see fewer storms, and the chance of a major hurricane hitting the region is significantly less than it was when the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began.

Tropical Storm Beryl, a compact, fast-moving system, continued to intensify Thursday and could become a hurricane in the coming days.

Shear is now high ahead of the storm over the eastern Caribbean (see Fig. 2), which should prevent significant strengthening. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour as it moved to the west at 16 miles per hour. Subtropical Storm Alberto became the first named storm of the season when it formed in May, dumping heavy rain on the southern United States. The system is then forecast to interact with a frontal system on Sunday, which would limit any additional development.

More summer storms are expected across Central Florida on Thursday, a day after a tornado touched down in Tavares, causing damage.
