Trump Lowers White House Flags For Slain Journalists After Reportedly Denying Request

President Donald Trump ordered American flags to be lowered to half-staff through Tuesday to honor of the victims of last week's deadly shooting at an Annapolis, Maryland, newspaper.

Perth-raised Mr Buckley, elected Annapolis mayor past year, submitted the flag request to the White House over the weekend.

The White House says Trump ordered the flags lowered as soon as he learned of the Annapolis mayor's request.

People walk in silence during a vigil in response to the shooting in the Capital Gazette newsroom.

She said that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke with Buckley both Monday night and Tuesday morning to alert him to the decision. He said Monday: "This was an attack on the press".

Trump issued a proclamation Tuesday ordering the flags fly at half-staff through sundown. "Americans across the country are united in calling upon God to be with the victims and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends".

"Obviously, I'm disappointed", Buckley told the Baltimore Sun. It was an attack on freedom of speech.

The U.S. flag is flown at half-staff on federal buildings by presidential proclamation as a sign of respect after the deaths of public officials or noteworthy figures and after some mass shootings.

"At this point in time, it would start to polarize people and I don't want to make people angry."
Buckley told the Gazette. He said he had considered lowering the flags himself, but the Democratic congressman and his wife talked him out of it, saying protocol should be followed. Jarrod W. Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in their killings.

Trump has repeatedly called journalists the "enemy of the people".
