Trump visit: London on LOCKDOWN as trip to spark protests

The mayor of London has said he approved the flying of a giant blimp depicting President Trump as an angry, orange baby near parliament as it is an expression of free speech.

Opponents to the controversial U.S. leader have threatened mass protests but Mr Trump is expected to avoid areas such as central London where demonstrators are likely to gather.

But any good vibrations from that moment soon dissipated when Trump, the same day, announced plans to ban migrants from seven Muslim-majority countries - a decision that drew fierce global criticism and appeared to blindside May.

The sad news for Trump Baby is that Trump himself apparently won't be spending much time in London itself and is unlikely to see his inflated, infantile likeness in person.

Trump's trip is part of a working visit and not a state visit, an invitation to which was extended to him personally by May just days after his inauguration.

Sadiq Khan supported the decision taken by the Greater London Authority to allow the 20ft inflatable, dubbed "Trump Baby" to rise above Parliament Square Gardens for two hours on Friday morning while the USA president is in London.

Thousands are expected to protest across the capital, heavily led by Owen Jones" "Stop Trump' rally, which will go ahead on Friday July 13. We talk about Trump and Angela Merkel because it's "difficult" " said Leslie Vinjamuri, head of the USA and Americas program at the Chatham House think tank.

"If the president wants to do something, we'll make it possible".

A statement on the USA embassy website warns U.S. citizens to "be aware of your surroundings [and] exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent".

On Friday, Trump will bypass the mass protests in London as he heads to May's country residence, Chequers, for bilateral talks, to be followed by tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in the afternoon. "It's really kind of irrelevant to what we're trying to do, and doesn't express the opinion of the British people that I've met", he told the BBC's Today programme.

Here is what 20 people who we spoke to on the streets of London thought about the U.S. president's upcoming visit.

Immediately after arriving in London, Trump and his wife will attend a black-tie dinner in Oxfordshire hosted by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Strengthening trade and defence links will be the focal point of US President Donald Trump's visit to the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister has said.
