Tesla investors tell Elon Musk to apologize for 'pedo' Twitter remarks

Shares in electric auto maker Tesla plunged on Monday as investors in the company were not too impressed after CEO Elon Musk called a British caver involved in the rescue of 12 Thai children last week a "pedo".

In a weird series of tweets on Sunday, Musk said he would produce a video proving his submarine would have been able to reach the children and in a comment directed at Unsworth, added: "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it".

These comments have led Unsworth to consider taking legal action against Musk.

Today, the diver - who was an instrumental part of the rescue efforts - told reporters he is considering legal action against Mr Musk. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.

The tweet was later deleted. And while Musk's fans lauded his intentions, his submarine drive-by also became the butt of many jokes.

Representatives for Tesla and Musk's office did not respond to requests for comment.

In the end, it was the team of divers who saved the children through a complicated rescue mission.

Musk has come under increased pressure in recent months as frustrations mount over his electric vehicle company's production and cash burn troubles.

Last week, before the boys were successfully retrieved, Thai official Narongsak Osotthanakorn, who was in charge of the rescue mission's command center, said that Musk's miniature submarine was "not practical with our mission" though he thought the submarine was "technologically sophisticated". "The submarine, I believe, was about 5 foot 6 long, rigid so it wouldn't have gone round corners or round any obstacles". Musk told his followers on Twitter that he was talking to cave experts about a "tiny, kid-size submarine" that he had created that "might be safe enough to try". When others criticized Musk's accusation that Unsworth was a pedophile, the billionaire added, "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true".

To avoid long-term damage, "the first thing Musk needs to do is issue a huge apology", Mr Moorhead said.

But his latest outburst on Twitter attacking a British rescue worker in Thailand has raised fresh concerns over the star tech entrepreneur's stability and leadership abilities. In the tweets, Musk strayed from a vigorous defence of his companies into personal insult, with no facts to back it up.

"I have a lot of support from people around the world astonished by his unfounded comments", he said.

The interviewer then mentions that Musk went into the cave at one point, and Unsworth shrugs and says, "And was asked to leave very quickly".

The episode also seemed to repel some of Tesla's closest backers, including alternative-energy loyalists who saw in Tesla a worthy opponent to the juggernauts of the oil and gas industries.

Mr Bob O'Donnell, founder of Technalysis Research, said Mr Musk has fallen into a "hero worship persona" but has failed to live up to the responsibility that implies.
