Thousands gather to honour those affected by The Danforth shooting

On Monday evening, Toronto police identified a 10-year-old girl who was killed in the attack as Julianna Kozis of Markham, Ont. Police said in a news release that her family is asking for privacy while they grieve her death.

Yesterday, however, Amaq claimed that Hussain "carried out the attack in response to calls to target nationals of countries of the coalition" that has been fighting IS in Syria and Iraq since 2014.

"At this stage, we have no evidence to support these claims", said Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders at a press conference.

"At this time, there is no national-security nexus to the investigation", said a spokesperson for the ministry of public safety. "Sources say police in Toronto and CSIS officials in Ottawa, as well as the RCMP, are looking into his past, which sources say include his residence in Afghanistan and Pakistan".

Detectives in Canada are still seeking a motive for a mass shooting which left three dead - including the gunman - and injured more than a dozen others, as residents of Toronto grapple with the latest in a string of violent incidents to hit Canada's biggest city in recent months.

"While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end", the family said.

"Julianna was a lovely, aspiring athlete who was in her third year in our sport", said the statement, which urged people to join them in sending thoughts and prayers to her family.

"Our hearts are in pieces for the victims and for our city as we all come to grips with this awful tragedy", the statement said. "We will mourn those who were lost for the rest of our lives", Hussain's family said in a statement. It is not known whether he was shot, he killed himself. It is now illegal to possess an unregistered handgun or any kind of rapid-fire weapon. Gun ownership also requires training, a personal risk assessment, two references, spousal notification and criminal record checks.

Councillors approved a motion to urge the federal government to forbid the sale of handguns in the city and for the province to outlaw the sale of handgun ammunition in Toronto. It passed on a 41-4 vote.

On Tuesday, Toronto city council, led by mayor John Tory, began debating a range of measures aimed at tackling gun violence in the city. While some friends said he was "not at all radical", others said he was more interested in Islamic discussions "when there were more people around".

Reese Fallon, 18, who recently graduated from high school and was preparing to study nursing at Hamilton's McMaster University in the fall, was also killed in the attack.

"I used to see him around a lot and he did not seem to have any behaviour problems", Ahmed said, adding that she was shocked to learn of Hussain's involvement in the shooting.

"I'm out of my mind just thinking about it". A source close to the family told CTV News he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but The Special Investigations Unit has not confirmed if he was shot by police or if his injuries were self-inflicted.
