Citizenship List In Indian State Stokes Fears Of Deportation

The draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), published on Monday, includes only those able to prove they were in Assam before 1971, when millions fled Bangladesh's war of independence into the state.

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won control of Assam in 2016 after promising to expel illegal immigrants from mainly Muslim Bangladesh and protect the rights of indigenous groups. Hindustan Times delivers the news across all social media platforms, on the web, and at your doorstep.

Supporting the publication of the NRC complete draft in Assam, he said some politicians are "shedding crocodile tears" as they are wary that their "vote bank" politics will come to an end.

The Assam government has brought in 25,000 extra security force members from outside the state in case of trouble.

Critics say it is the latest move by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bolster India's Hindu majority at the expense of minorities. "Our people have died here, but we will not leave this place".

The government said the draft was not meant to drive people out and those struck off the list would have a chance to reapply. There are a lot of irregularities in the report.

State NRC Coordinator, while releasing the list in front of the media said that people who were not included in the list can make claims and objections, as reported by ANI.

The Minister said: "There is no question of any coercive action against anyone".

Union home minister has made it clear that based on this draft, no one will be taken to detention centres and no one will be referred to Foreigners' Tribunal. Asked whether West Bengal would give shelter to those whose names have not appeared in the final NRC draft, she said, "They have their homes ... they are inhabitants of Assam".

The student body had set up an NRC Control Room also during the publication of first draft to help the citizens.

Over 40 lakh people in Assam have been left out from the the NRC, which is being prepared to identify alleged undocumented migrants in Assam.
