Mnangagwa reaches out to Chamisa

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission's decision to delay announcing the results of the presidential race at least until Thursday - three days after the vote - seemed certain to bring more opposition anger if President Emmerson Mnangagwa is declared the victor. The commission said two seats were won by smaller parties and 58 seats had yet to be declared.

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa, 40, said the presidential results were fraudulent.

A helicopter has been seen hovering over Harare as armed troops were deployed into Zimbabwe's capital to try to disperse hundreds of opposition protesters. The result in the presidential vote is due by 4 August but expected sooner.

"I will stay here until Chamisa is president", said Amandishe Muzhinji, who traveled back from Swaziland where he works as a migrant laborer to vote in Monday's election.

The assessments are critical for Zimbabwe, because foreign governments, including the USA, have made any financial aid conditional on holding democratic elections.

Meanwhile, officials from the electoral commission were read the results from the parliamentary contest in a stuffy meeting room in the Rainbow Hotel.

Even before the violence, European Union observers questioned the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary vote, the first since Mugabe's forced resignation after almost 40 years in charge of the southern African nation.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, the country's largest group of nongovernmental organisations, said the July 30 election "falls short of a credible process". But there was no response from the MDC Alliance leader, who claimed several times on Twitter to have "won the popular vote" but provided no numbers or concrete evidence of fraud by the ruling ZANU-PF party.

Mr Mnangagwa took over the ZANU-PF party after ousting Robert Mugabe in a bloodless coup in November.

The EU did not understand why the release of the presidential result was taking so long, Brok said.

A presidential poll will be held on Saturday, September 8, if a candidate does not secure more than 50 percent of the vote, but it will probably take a couple of days before the results of the presidential election have come in. "We know that people will be beaten - especially in rural areas, like what they were doing before", said Harare shop worker Tracy Kubara, 26.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the unfortunate deaths of three people during the riots and melee which occurred in Harare Central business district", police spokeswoman Charity Charamba told state television.

Though some results in local races have been announced, she said full and official results might not be announced until the weekend.

The main opposition and ZESN, the main domestic election monitor, had on Tuesday said one in five polling stations - more than 2,000 in all - had not physically posted tallies on their doors, as required by law.

Mr Chamisa has won most urban centres.

"You voted for total Change in this past election!" the lawyer and minister said.

"Rocks were thrown into the compound of the ruling ZANU-PF party".

"We have won this one together".

But the opposition says Zanu-PF rigged the election.
