Steven Seagal appointed by Russian Federation as special envoy to the U.S.

Back in 2016, President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to Seagal in effort to help relations between Moscow and the United States.

In 2014, Seagal posted a statement on his website to clarify that he had been misquoted by media outlets saying he called Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, the world's greatest leader.

"It's a case of people's diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy", the ministry said of the appointment, likening Seagal's role to that of a United Nations goodwill ambassador.

The Flight of Fury star, still popular with Russian audiences, has recently defended the Russian government over claims that it meddled in 2016 United States elections.

Russian Federation has handed Hollywood movie star Steven Seagal the task of keeping relations cordial with the United States.

Reacting to the appointment, Seagal said he was "deeply humbled and honoured". Former co-stars have often talked about the actor's violent temper on the set of his movies, which doesn't really bode well for negotiating peace between two countries.

He called Putin a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the United States and Russian Federation.

Seagal, who has Russian roots, has been a long time supporter of the country, visiting it regularly as he opened a chain of the Planet Hollywood franchise in Moscow in the 90s.

Seagal thanked the Russian government for his new role, describing the appointment as "a great honor".

The Foreign Ministry announced the move Saturday on its Facebook page. "I take this honour very seriously".

"The task is to promote the further development of Russian-American relations in the humanitarian sphere, including interaction in the field of culture, art, public and youth exchanges and more", it added.

Seagal has been closely connected to Putin over the past few years, even attending the Russian president's swearing-in ceremony after this year's Russian election earlier this year.
