The Spaniard previously played for La Liga club Barcelona, where he made more than 300 appearances and collected around 20 titles, including three Champions League triumphs.

Asked if he expects the 29-year-old to be part of his midfield this season, Sarri said: "Yes I do".

"Since becoming a Chelsea player he has regularly demonstrated his quality on the field and we look forward to seeing him continue to flourish under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri".

"I have always been clear about enjoying playing for Chelsea, I have never (said) that I wanted to leave the club, but some situations that have happened with the other coach left me upset".

"I have no reaction to the agent, I am not interested", said Sarri after suffering his first competitive loss as Chelsea manager in the 2-0 Community Shield defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
