Trump would fight any U.S. special counsel subpoena in court: president's lawyer

President Trump's other claim in his Sunday tweet - that he did not know about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians - may also be exposed as a lie.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"

But Mr Trump still insisted he did not know about the meeting at Trump Tower between Donald Jr and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin.

Donald Trump Jr's phone line disconnected on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham's show on Monday just as she was asking him about his Trump Tower meeting with Russians.

The U-turn was the USA president's clearest acknowledgement that the June 2016 meeting was aimed at getting damaging information on his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Young Trump responded "I love it" when first offered the "dirt" on Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

Last night various United States outlets, including the Washington Post, CNN and AP, reported that Trump was anxious his son could be in legal trouble over the meeting.

It was later reported that was false and the president was involved in constructing his son's misleading statement.

A day later, the paper reported that Trump Jr. was promised damaging information about Clinton at the meeting.

"It's illegal to ask for a contribution from a foreign government or a foreign entity or a foreign person, whether they're donating dollars to the campaign or donating something of value, which could include opposition research".

"They talked about the adoption stuff which was actually a big thing at the time, but nothing happened", Trump said in July 2017 about the meeting.

Abrams also said that Trump's Sunday tweet could be additional fodder for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether the Trump campaign participated in a criminal conspiracy with Russian Federation to rig the 2016 presidential election. They described the statement, which had not mentioned that the Russian lawyer was expected to bring damaging information about Clinton, as "short but accurate".

The meeting between Donald Jr and Ms Veselnitskaya is being looked at as part of this probe.

While collusion is not a technical legal charge, Mueller could bring conspiracy charges if he finds that any campaign member worked with Russian Federation to break US law.

And if you're Robert Mueller and you're looking at whether Trump obstructed justice, you've now got even more evidence of a clear attempt to mislead the public and obscure the truth. He defended calling the media "The Enemy of the People", and said journalists "purposely cause great division & distrust" and can "cause War!" And at a trio of rallies, he escalated his already vitriolic rhetoric toward the media, savaging the press for unflattering coverage and, he feels, bias. "They are very risky & sick!"
