Airstrikes Kill Dozens Including Children in Yemen

The United States called Thursday for a "thorough" investigation following the deaths of 29 children in northern Yemen in a strike on a bus carried out by the Saudi-led coalition.

The Saudi-led Coalition, which has been conducting a military campaign to oust the Houthi rebels, didn't immediately respond to CNN questions. "[ICRC] sending additional supplies to hospitals to cope with the influx".

The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) said that a hospital it supports in Saada had received 29 dead bodies of "mainly children" under 15 years of age, and 40 injured, including 30 children.

He added that this operation was "implemented in accordance with worldwide humanitarian law and customary rules".

The UN children's agency UNICEF said it was "very concerned with the initial reports of children being killed".

The Iranian backed Houthi rebels seized the capital of Sanaa in 2014 and overthrew the internationally recognised government led by President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi during a transition of power from former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The missile was sacked from the rebel-held Yemeni province of Amran towards Jizan, the coalition said.

Upon interception, Saudis say the missile exploded into fragments that killed one Yemeni civilian and injured 11 other people.

The assault was the latest in a string of airstrikes to target civilians by an American-backed regional coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In response, Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam called the coalition statement "absolutely ridiculous". Most of the images of the children hit by this airstrike are so gruesome the broadcasting rules don't allow us to show them - but a warning, the report still contains distressing images.

Abu Muzahem, a resident of Dahyan, was working building a house when the air strike hit the market on Thursday morning.

One person was killed in that attack, Saudi state media reported.

Wednesday's attack brings the tally to 167 rebel missiles launched since 2015, according to the coalition, which that year joined the Yemeni government's fight against Houthi rebels.

Worldwide aid groups were quick to condemn the air strike. A Saudi Arabian blockade has contributed to starvation and disease while a United Nations report found the Saudi-led bombing campaign - carried out with USA support - has hit schools, even weddings.

"US military support to our partners mitigates noncombatant casualties", said Pentagon spokeswoman Rebecca Rebarich, according to the statement. But the coalition denied carrying out any attacks in the city, saying it follows a "strict and transparent approach based on the rules worldwide law".

Impoverished Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is now in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22.2 million people in need of assistance.
