Kepa Arrizabalaga reveals how Pepe Reina convinced him to join Chelsea

He has signed a seven-year deal at the club and replaces Thibaut Courtois, who is set to join Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants allowed Ronaldo to move to Juventus after nine hugely successful years at the Bernabeu, but they are now lacking firepower up front and have yet to replace the Portuguese superstar. Chelsea will now reportedly receive a cash fee and midfielder Mateo Kovacic on loan as part of a deal to send Courtois to Real.

Athletic said the 23-year-old Kepa had his €80-million (NZ$138m) buyout clause paid on Wednesday, although the Spanish club did not say which team made the payment.

And thus, Kepa's move to Chelsea was triggered by Courtois leaving for Real Madrid, the very club that very almost prised the Spain global from Athletic in the first place. Only two keepers made more saves in the Liga last term, and he's pretty good with his feet too - once deployed outfield during an injury crisis for his U14 team, he scored twice.

"He is sad that I am leaving because we are very close there but he told me that London is an wonderful city", said the new Chelsea signing.

"Today is the day I leave my Athletic home, it is a day of mixed feelings to leave the club I joined as a nine-year-old, ” wrote Kepa". "I don't really think about the price".

A video on Real Madrid's official Twitter feed showed Courtois signing his contract alongside club president Florentino Perez.

"I've come to a club that I've always wanted to play for. I've got two kids here and that had a significant role to play in my decision".

Belgium global Courtois, 26, has yet to return to training and is linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Kepa is Spain's number two behind Manchester United's David de Gea and has one global cap.
