Delta Sigma Theta pays tribute to soror, the Queen of Soul

Standing in a semicircle surrounding Franklin's family, the women filed in for almost 10 minutes wearing black dresses, pearl necklaces, and corsages of African violets, the sorority's official flower.

According to Linda Swanson, executive vice president of Swanson Funeral Home, the dress had beading on the bodice and shoulders, and a boat neck collar with a chiffon bell sleeve.

Franklin was dressed in red symbolic of her membership in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The "Natural Woman" singer's nails and lips were the same cherry red they were on Tuesday. "She is, indeed, resplendent in repose, as a queen should be".

Linda Swanson, whose funeral home is handling services for Franklin, said the singer had covered the funeral expenses of many needy families over the years.

"I think this is really doing her really good", said nurse Tremaine Townsend, 38, among the thousands who filed past Franklin's casket on Wednesday, thrilled by the four-day celebration.

The casket carrying 18-time Grammy victor was transported from the funeral home to Midtown Detroit in a vintage 1940 Cadillac LaSalle hearse, according to Swanson Funeral Home president O'Neil D. Swanson.

Aretha Franklin's rep, Gwendolyn Quinn, says that the diva met Grande when they were both performing as part of the lineup for "Women of Soul", which was hosted at the White House in 2014 by then-President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

Franklin won 18 Grammy awards and provided a soundtrack to the civil rights movement, singing to raise money for the cause and uplifting activists with her phenomenal voice and upbeat anthems. "She never talked about death".

During her sold-out show at Detroit's Ford Field Tuesday night, the Reputation singer asked the crowd to pay tribute to the music icon, who passed away this month of pancreatic cancer, with a moment of silence.

Do you think it's a nice touch that the family chose to invite fans to pay their respects to the musical icon?
