Nike stock drops by 2% in wake of Kaepernick deal

"Even if it means sacrificing everything", as one of the faces of Nike's 30th anniversary of the "Just Do It" campaign.

People in the U.S. are destroying their Nike clothes to protest the company's new ad campaign starring Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback whose protests during the national anthem before games caught the ire of President Donald Trump.

Kaepernick's cause was taken up by other National Football League players last season, who launched protests that have been repeatedly slammed by US President Donald Trump. But Carlson ignored that the quarterback ― who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2012 season ― was cut from the team following the 2016 season and has not been picked up by any other team.

"Believe in something", the message superimposed over Kaepernick's face declares.

Social media has been divided over the issue of a protest and boycott of the Kaepernick deal.

The fallout was no surprise but Nike may be betting that the upside of a Kaepernick endorsement is worth angering conservative Americans and supporters of President Donald Trump.

"Colin is a Nike-sponsored athlete and has been since 2011", Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John said in a statement to Mic.

Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback at the centre of a raft of legal cases that's nearly assuredly going to rattle the very core of the league's institutional whiteness, was not only revealed to be the face of the campaign, but a very well-paid one at that.

Nike marked the 30th anniversary of the campaign with a new ad that said, "Believe in something". The protests during the national anthem, started by Kaepernick, embraced by other players throughout the league and criticized repeatedly by President Trump, have been a divisive issue for the league, players and fans.

Kaepernick's profile has not faded in his time out of the league, and sales of his merchandise remained strong in 2017 even though he was not playing.

According to social media analysis site Spredfast, there were more than 800 tweets using the hashtag #JustBurnIt in a matter of hours on Tuesday morning.

Much to the disappointment of Nike's boycotters, no sneakers were "droned striked" in the making of this next tweet.

A Nike spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Team owners reacted to widespread condemnation by banding together and ruling that all players must stand during the national anthem. The best part was showing pictures of his soundman's cut-up Nike socks, also claiming that said soundman will also burn all his Nike stuff when he gets back to Nashville.
