Facebook, Twitter chiefs face lawmakers amid election security concerns

Congresman Mike Doyle (D- PA) read off statements by President Donald Trump and other Republicans making claims against Twitter that Dorsey said were just false. While the tweets were clearly prepared to go beforehand, this is the first time someone live-tweeted their testimony from the hot seat at a congressional hearing.

Before the hearing, President Donald Trump, without offering evidence, accused the companies themselves of interfering in the upcoming US mid-term elections, telling the Daily Caller that social media firms are "super liberal".

"Congress is going to have to take action here", said Warner.

"Clearly this problem is not going away; I'm not even sure it's trending in the right direction", Burr said of the threat to U.S. elections from foreign influence operations on social media platforms. Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg will also face questions, mainly surrounding what her company has done to crack down on abuse and other forms of content created to mislead.

"We were too slow to spot this and too slow to act", Sandberg told the committee in her opening statement.

The committee invited Larry Page, the CEO of Google's parent company Alphabet.

"Blockchain is one that I think has a lot of untapped potential, specifically around distributed trust and distributed enforcement".

"As I previously announced in this committee, I am soon introducing legislation to direct the Department of Commerce to convene a working group of stakeholders to develop a consensus-based definition of blockchain", she said prior to asking Dorsey about the social media firm's work with the technology.

Dorsey also rejected allegations that Twitter operates on the basis of political bias, AFP reported.

Republicans control majorities in both the Senate and House, but the House's approach to the election issue has been far more partisan than in the Senate.

The Twitter CEO will be facing the US Congress in another session separate from the hearing with Google and Facebook executives.

Instead, an empty chair, complete with a glass of water, joined Sandberg and Dorsey on the dais. Rubio slams movie for omitting Armstrong planting American flag on the moon MORE (R-Fla.), who's also on the committee, suggested Google didn't attend either "because they're arrogant" or because of aBuzzFeed News story published Tuesday that showed researchers reportedly posing as Russian trolls were able to purchase ads on the search platform. "It violated the values of our company and of the country we love".

Google did release written "testimony" from Walker ahead of the hearing, even though he was not expected to appear.
