In primary stunner, progressive ousts Massachusetts Rep. Michael Capuano

In a major upset, Representative Michael Capuano has conceded to Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts's 7th District.

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley greeted family, friends and supporters after beating Rep. Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District.

When given the chance to get behind the first black woman from MA headed to Capitol Hill, the Congressional Black Caucus chose to endorse Capuano instead. Capuano - along with the entire MA congressional delegation - supports the "Blue Lives Matter" bill, making assaulting a police officer a federal crime. Zakim also picked up the Massachusetts Democratic Party's official endorsement.

Garrison served one term as a state representative in 1992, but she has lost countless elections since leaving that office.

Both he and Ms Pressley are seen as progressives - but she advocated for a more "activist" style of leadership.

Ocasio-Cortez beat 10-year incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the Democratic primary for New York's 14th Congressional District race in June. Pressley was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, and has been profiled in several news outlets. Pressley argued in her campaign that Capuano represents an old guard of politics, and it's time for a change. Pressley will also be the first person of color to ever represent the state in Congress.

Another Democrat, U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, is retiring at the end of this term, and that open seat touched off a political scramble with 10 candidates on the Democratic primary ballot.

Pressley has always been a Democratic star in the making who's been closely watched since her 2015 speech at an EMILY's List event headlined by Hillary Clinton - but, with no members of Congress retiring, had no path to the national stage.

"Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us", Pressley told wildly cheering supporters Tuesday night.

Pressley, 44, has embraced expanding the Medicare federal health insurance program to cover all Americans and effectively abolishing the Immigrants and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unit of the Department of Homeland Security.

For Pressley, as with many other ascendant candidates of color, unabashedly liberal credentials smoothed her path to victory in the primary.

"When I was growing up, my mother and I felt voiceless and invisible, but she made sure I knew that on Election Day we were powerful", she said during her speech.

The votes decided who advances to the November general election to run for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and other offices.
