U.S. charges North Korean spy over NHS cyber attack

The 34-year-old worked "on behalf of the government of North Korea or the Workers' Party of Korea", according to United States authorities. Officials insist that the timing of the unsealing of the criminal complaint has nothing to do with the June summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump, or with the push to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

The criminal complaint, filed in Los Angeles, alleges that the hackers committed several attacks from 2014 until 2018. "And it created indiscriminate malware that paralyzed computers and disrupted the delivery of medical care".

The Justice Department is expected to announce charges against Pak Jin Hyok, accused of hacking on behalf of North Korea's military intelligence agency; he is also allegedly linked to the Lazarus Group, which has been implicated in other cyberattacks, including the WannaCry computer virus.

The group is also deemed to be behind denial-of-service attacks against the government, banks, and media companies in South Korea. "Linking the DPRK to the Sony hacking is another fabrication targeting the country", said the unidentified diplomat.

Park, a programmer who graduated from a Pyongyang's Kim Chaek University of Technology, worked for a North Korean government-owned company called Chosun Expo Joint Venture. Prosecutors said the complaint was sealed for a variety of reasons and wasn't done to prevent derailing the Singapore talks. It looked in many ways like a typical tech company, boasting of its "pioneering" IT talent and customer satisfaction.

The investigators revealed that cinema chain AMC was also targeted because it was due to show the film, as well as an unnamed British production company that was also working on a film depicting North Korea.

Sometime later, the site vanished from the web.

The malicious activities attributed to Park and his group include the cybertheft of $81 million from the Bangladesh Bank.

The Justice Department in recent years has charged hackers from China, Iran and Russian Federation in hopes of publicly shaming other countries for sponsoring cyberattacks on US corporations.

In 2014, the Obama administration charged five Chinese military hackers with several digital break-ins at United States companies, and a year ago, the Justice Department charged Russian hackers with an intrusion at Yahoo Inc.

Specifically, Park has been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

It's unlikely he will be extradited because the US has no formal relations with North Korea.

The US government acknowledged that it is unlikely to get their hands on Park Jin Hyok - his last known location was North Korea and the US does not have an extradition treaty with the dictatorship - but argued it was still important to name him and lodge a formal complaint.

Hours before the anticipated announcement Thursday, Mr. Trump thanked Kim Jong Un for offering glowing words about Mr. Trump.
