Dallas officer fatally shoots man after mistaking his apartment for her own

When officers initially responded to the scene, they began investigating the case as an officer-involved shooting, Hall said.

A police officer in Texas shot and killed a 26-year-old man whom she thought was in her apartment - only, it wasn't her apartment, police said. She will be placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Police say the officer, who has not yet been publicly identified, arrived at the downtown apartment complex after working her normal police shift and was still in full uniform upon entering the victim's apartment, which she thought was her own.

In 2016, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, where he majored in accounting and management information systems, according to a statement from the school.

"In order for us to be truly transparent to this community, given the circumstances, we have invited the Texas Rangers to conduct this investigation".

Chief Hall said she has been in contact with Jean's family and offered her condolences. The video footage was supposed to be filmed by one of Jean's neighbors in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, purportedly showing the officer pacing nervously on the landing one floor above.

Jeffrey Scherzer, who lives at the complex, said when he returned home late at night an officer escorted him to his apartment and warned him to steer clear of a blood trail. Activists and religious leaders called for expanded power for the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board, for the arrest of the police officer and for change in DPD's policing. Her eyes welling with tears, she stopped in front of a makeshift memorial in front of Dallas police headquarters.

The St. Lucia Times, a newspaper published on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, said Jean was the son of a former permanent secretary of that island nation.

Authorities have not said how the officer got into his home or whether the door was open or unlocked.

Jean was listed on LinkedIn as a risk assurance experienced associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries where he died, according to KDFW.

Authorities haven't released the identity of the officer, who allegedly entered the wrong apartment in her building around 10 p.m.

"This is a bad tragedy".

"Right now there are more questions than answers", Chief Hall said.
