US Open 2018: Novak Djokovic Enters Semi-final by Defeating John Millman

Ralph Ellis had his money on Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic at the start of the US Open and likes what he saw in last night's quarter-final victory.

He nearly fell over, spun around uncontrollably and even slipped on the sweat of his opponent before winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 against this year's ultimate underdog John Millman.

Serbian sixth seed Djokovic, who will cap the night session, is in familiar territory, appearing in his 11th quarter-final at Flushing Meadows, and looks like a favourite with five-time victor Roger Federer knocked out of his half of the draw.

He'll be facing Kei Nishikori, who upset Marin Cilic to advance to his third career Grand Slam semifinal - all three coming in the US Open.

The No. 21-seeded Nishikori continued his strong season after returning from a wrist injury that forced him to miss the US Open past year.

The victory for Nishikori means that for the first time in the open era there will be a Japanese man and woman contesting the semifinals of a grand slam as Naomi Osaka cruised past Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko 6-1 6-1. "Just trying to find a way to hang in there".

But he hasn't returned to a Grand Slam final since, falling in the US Open semis in 2016. But Millman is the kind of player that makes you miss and makes you earn the point.

Osaka's next opponent will likely be her toughest yet, as she's set to face Madison Keys in the semifinals.

The Millman magic finally ran out late in the second set Wednesday with both players on serve.

The sixth-seeded Djokovic was far from his best, but ultimately he didn't need to be to defeat the 55-ranked Millman, who fought gamely and entertained the crowd with his hustle and grit.

"I don't know the answer". The unseeded Australian knocked out 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in the fourth round to reach his first major quarterfinal.

Djokovic threatened to pull away all through the match but was never able to shake off Millman.

Osaka wasn't born when compatriot Kimiko Date made the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1996 but now the 20-year-old has the opportunity to go one better by reaching a maiden Grand Slam final.

"I asked the chair umpire whether they are using some form of ventilation or air conditioning down at the court level side, and he said he's not aware of it - it's only what comes through the hallway", added Djokovic.

But they also underscore a growing problem: increasing nighttime temperatures.Under climate change, overall temperatures are rising - 2018 is on track to be the fourth-warmest year on record - but the warming is not happening evenly.

In the third set, Djokovic again claimed the break.

"He apologised for going to change [clothes] in the second set but I said "it's OK, I need the rest". But when Djokovic attempted to move ahead a second break, Millman rebelled and took something out of the Serbian in a glorious 22-point, nine-deuce game. "Changing a lot of T-shirts, shorts", said Djokovic. After the first, Djokovic double-faulted, and he wound up getting broken there.
