"Coffee Boy" Papadopoulos Sentenced To 14 Days

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos was sentenced Friday for lying to the FBI in the special counsel's investigation into Russian election interference and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign.

"I do credit the sense that he does feel remorse", Moss said.

Others associated with Trump's campaign, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and deputy campaign manager Rick Gates, have accepted plea deals.

The judge had planned a harsher sentence but said he was moved by Papadopolous' words of contrition.

He pleaded guilty in October to making false statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about his interactions with a Russian national and the Maltese professor. Even after he pleaded guilty, Goldstein said, Papadopoulos made only "begrudging efforts to cooperate".

Papadopoulos' mother Kiki, aunt Maria and father Tony spoke to CNN as they exited the hearing. "But there is no doubt in my mind that the judge issued what he thought was a very fair sentence". "It will give him time to think things over".

His mother said on Friday that she "still supports" Trump. He hopes to be excused from probation immediately after the sentencing because of the last 13 months he's spent since his arrest, his memo said.

Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, along with potential obstruction of justice on the part of the president, recommended in August that Papadopoulos be sentenced to six months in prison.

Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in a Pennsylvania prison and received a $20,000 fine.

His lawyer Tom Breen said that at the time, Papadopoulos was naive and acted on what he told the court was a "misguided loyalty" to Trump, who had been inaugurated as president just one week before.

Papadopoulos soon made contact with a mysterious Maltese academic, Joseph Mifsud.

The young political operative maintains that he never alerted the Trump campaign about the Russian dirt.

During an interview with The New York Times this week, Papadopoulos, 31, for the first time gave his own account of why he deceived Federal Bureau of Investigation agents after they arrived at his house in Chicago that January asking about any connections between the Trump campaign and Russian intermediaries. He had also heard from them that the Russians had "dirt", in the form of emails, on Hillary Clinton, though he did not realize the seriousness of the stolen emails before they were released, his attorney said. A scheduled Federal Bureau of Investigation cooperation interview was canceled.

As he and his wife Simona Mangiante reviewed other overtures from possible spooks from Britain and Israel, they giggled about rumors that they were spies themselves. According to investigators, the meeting was held on 24 March 2016 - after he came in command of the trump. Last November, Mr Sessions testified to Congress that he had "pushed back" against Papadopoulos' offer. "I still have significant questions about how high that information went, and I know the Senate Intelligence Committee would like to hear directly from Mr. Papadopoulos".
