Brexit: Theresa May warns Boris Johnson ‘it’s my deal or no deal’

The prime minister will try to persuade her continental counterparts that her Chequers plan does not present a threat to the single market over dinner on Wednesday.

The Brexit deadlock over the Irish border could be broken after Brussels accepted it will need to soften its position to strike a deal with Britain.

There was talk of an open talk to oust May last week and Boris Johnson is very vocal in his criticism of the Chequers agreement.

Asked in an interview for Panorama, asked why she thought Brexit would be good for Britain, she replied: "It gives the United Kingdom opportunities as an independent and sovereign state to build a better future for all our people".

Mrs May also warned that the only alternative to Parliament passing her proposals would be no-deal.

Prime Minister Theresa May left no doubt that she was prepared to be a "bloody hard woman" in defence of her Brexit plans and intends to reach a "good deal" with the European Union - one that lawmakers would have a choice to accept or see Britain crash out of the bloc.

May's former foreign minister, Boris Johnson, attacked May's Brexit plans, known as Chequers after the country house where they were hashed out in July, as a "political vehicle crash".

Under the plan, goods could be tracked using barcodes on shipping containers for "trusted trader" firms routinely importing and exporting between the two territories.

"I don't want manufacturers to feel that they've got to operate under all sorts of different rules, because that complicates life for them and that potentially means business leaving this country", she said.

May remains confident of striking an acceptable deal with Brussels meanwhile.

Attempting to assert control over a fractious party and faltering Brexit negotiations, May told the BBC that if rebel lawmakers shoot down a deal between her government and the European Union, "the alternative to that will be having no deal".

"If we are to get out of this mess, and get the great British motor back on track, then we need to understand the Irish backstop, and how it is being used to coerce the United Kingdom into becoming a vassal state of Brussels".

May has proposed to keep Britain aligned to European Union rules in return for free trade in goods and an open border between the UK's Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

"We plan to fight very, very hard to make mobility straight forward, regulations transparent and efficient so that this is less of an issue".

The fate of May's government and her Brexit plan is in doubt because it is unclear whether she could command the 320 votes she needs in the House of Commons, the lower house of the British parliament, to approve a deal. There is a political mobilisation in the United Kingdom in this regard.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier is drafting a new "protocol" text that includes the use of technology to minimise checks at the Irish border, according to The Times.
