Migrants: Trump urges Spain to build wall in Sahara Desert

United States president Donald Trump has urged the Spanish government to tackle the Mediterranean migration crisis by building a wall across the Sahara desert, Spain's foreign minister has said.

"Closing ports is not a solution, and neither is building a wall along the Sahara like President Trump suggested to me recently", Josep Borrell told a lunchtime gathering this week, according to a video released by Spanish media.

Borrell made it clear he disagreed with the plan, although Spain has built 20-foot walls topped with razor wire around its African territories of Melilla and Ceuta.

Spain has been battling a migration crisis.

President Donald Trump's obsession with building walls has apparently gone global. The Sahara desert stretches for 3,000 miles.

He insisted the U.S. border with Mexico was wider than the Sahara desert.

Trump's call for a wall on the southern border - which he repeatedly insisted that Mexico would pay for - was a hallmark of his presidential campaign, with "Build the Wall!" chants still breaking out at his frequent "MAGA" rallies.

Trump is thought to have made the suggestion in June when Borrell accompanied Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia on an official trip to the White House.

It would be similar to Trump's planned wall across the US-Mexico border to stop illegal immigration. They have become magnets for African migrants seeking a better life in Europe and refugees fleeing persecution and conflict.

The Spanish government has not yet commented on Trump's suggestion, but, a spokesman for the foreign ministry confirmed the foreign minister's remarks about the conversation, but said, "We won't be making any further comment on the minister's remarks".
