Michelle Guthrie Fired From Position As ABC Managing Director

It was an issue that Ms Guthrie took up with gusto, sending an email to staff on her first day on the job calling for greater representation of women and multicultural communities in both the ABC's staff and its stories.

"So in this case the board decided that it wasn't working out and decided that we should do a reset, and that is what we have chose to do".

"The board felt in the end that her leadership style was not the style that we needed going forward". She said there is no justification for the Board to trigger the termination cause and she is considering her legal options.

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has been sacked from the national broadcaster.

David Anderson, ABC director, entertainment & specialist, has been invited by the Board to serve as acting managing director until the role is filled.

The stunning statement comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was informed of the decision to axe Guthrie last night by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.

She was also critical of the government's competitive neutrality inquiry into how the ABC and the SBS operate alongside their commercial counterparts.

Michelle Guthrie has been a controversial figure at the ABC as she managed tighter budgets along with leading expansion into new business areas.

"I am devastated by the board's decision to terminate my employment despite no claim of wrongdoing on my part", the now former managing director of the ABC said in a written statement.

"In resolving to seek fresh leadership, the Board's foremost consideration was the long-term interests of our own people and the millions of Australians who engage with ABC content every week", Milne said.

The Australian has been told flashpoints include two key initiatives of the chairman, the ABC Annual Public Meeting, held in February, and July's announcement of Project Jetstream, a multimillion-dollar idea created to provide a digital infrastructure base for the ABC decades into the future when broadcast television shuts down.

Before joining the ABC, Ms Guthrie's career included stints as an executive at News Corporation's Foxtel, and Asian satellite service Star TV.

ABC board chairman Justin Milne.

He thanked Ms Guthrie for her hard work since taking the position in May 2016. To me, it is the content produced by the ABC that is of primary importance to Australians, with the technology used to deliver that content a distant second.

Melbourne radio host Jon Faine, who's been at the broadcast for almost 30 years and three months ago attacked Guthrie saying he was "sick of getting it ripped apart because of the failure of our managers" and being "done over" by the government, this morning launched another attack on the departed MD saying her tenure had been an "astonishing fail".
