Brett Kavanaugh can’t stop shouting ‘I like beer’ at his hearing today

She then asked Kavanaugh if he had ever drank so much he "didn't remember what happened the night before or part of what happened".

Kavanaugh did admit to drinking to excess. He wrote that he and his friends aimed to consume 100 kegs of beer their senior year. That means Kavanaugh was legal there for only the final four months of his senior year at Georgetown Prep, following his February 12, 1983 birthday.

Kavanaugh later apologized for his question, but the exchange stood out Thursday in testimony from Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.

"Yes, we drank beer, my friends and I, boys and girls", Kavanaugh told the committee. It would have been legal for him to buy and consume beer in D.C., which did not raise its drinking age from 18 to 21 until 1986, for most of his senior year, but it sounds like the parties to which he refers generally happened in Maryland. "And in my conversations with them, I believe them when they say they haven't decided. just because we're having a committee vote today, committees have advanced nominees to the floors who later get pulled back or investigations occur". Yes, we drank beer. Sometimes others did. I liked beer. The drinking age as I noted, was 18, so the seniors were legal. In the summer of 1982, seven months before he turned 18, the state raised the legal drinking age for beer and wine from 18 to 21.

A New Yorker report published Sunday detailed an allegation that Kavanaugh exposed himself to Deborah Ramirez, a Yale student, at a dorm-room party as onlookers watched during the 1983-84 school year. The drinking age in NY initially was 19, but it rose to 21 as of December 1985. "And yes, the seniors were legal".

Kavanaugh mentioned his appreciation for the yeasty beverage during his opening statement to the committee, almost an hour after Christine Blasey Ford finished telling the committee about the evening she says he attempted to rape her when they were in high school. But in fact, that never applied to him. "And in your written testimony, you said sometimes you had too many drinks".

At one point, Kavanaugh asked a Senator if they like drinking beer too.

"There is a bright line between drinking beer, which I gladly do, and which I fully embrace, and sexually assaulting someone, which is a violent crime".

Alcoholic consumption by Kavanaugh also would have been illegal during notorious Beach Week, an annual trip to the Eastern Shore that involved heavy drinking, according to numerous eyewitness accounts.

There was a grandfather clause in the Maryland law, but only for those who were 18, 19 or 20 on the day the increase went into effect, thereby not including Kavanaugh.
