Court Grants 10 Days Physical Remand Of Shehbaz Sharif

Shahbaz, 67, is the younger brother of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is facing corruption charges in three cases.

LAHORE, Pakistan - Pakistani opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif was ordered jailed on Saturday for 10 days after being arrested in a corruption case, his lawyer said, meaning he will not be able to campaign for his party ahead of crucial by-elections next week.

For his part, according to local media, Shahbaz told the court Saturday that he didn't do any corruption and demanded an open court trail.

The NAB has been granted a 10-day physical remand of Shehbaz.

Naeemul Haq, a leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), said he was not aware of the facts regarding the former Punjab chief minister's reported arrest.

Shahbaz is accused of ordering the cancellation of a contract given to successful bidder Chaudhry Latif and Sons for the Ashiana Housing Scheme, and engineering the subsequent award of the contract to Lahore Casa Developers, a proxy group of Paragon City Private Limited, resulting in a loss of Rs193 million to the exchequer.

Shahbaz, the PML-N president, was detained by NAB officials and his vehicle along with his private staff who accompanied him as security were sent away.

Nawaz termed his brother's arrest a worst political victimisation.

"NAB Lahore has arrested former chief minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif in Aashyana company case".

PML-N also said that the arrest of Sharif was meant to weaken the party before by-elections to be held on October 14. And on Sept 19, the Islamabad High Court suspended their sentences and granted them bail till the disposal of their appeals.

The blue-eyed officers of Shahbaz and Nawaz, Lahore Development Authority former director general Ahad Cheema and Fawad Hasan Fawad, former principal secretary to Nawaz Sharif, are already in NAB custody in the Ashiana Housing case.

Salman Shehbaz and key members of the Sharif family were also present during the meeting.

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Khursheed Shah condemned the arrest, calling it an insult to Parliament.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said PML-N leaders are reviewing the situation and the party will form a strategy after thorough deliberations on the issue. Shehbaz Sharif is being probed in other corruption cases as well.
