MLB Rumors: Bryce Harper will 'eventually' sign with Phillies?

The Dodgers offered Puig in a trade, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, but the two sides could not strike a deal.

It might not be today, but a recent story strongly suggested that when Bryce Harper does eventually sign a mega-deal this offseason, it will indeed be with Phillies.

As Allen pointed out, Harper's timing is interesting, as he has become a free agent after his contract with the Nationals expired at the conclusion of the 2018 season. However, the team is still open to a different deal.

Since Harper was under contract with the Nationals at the time, they had exclusive rights to negotiate with him. Giancarlo Stanton signed a 13-year, $325 million deal with the Marlins, but now has $270 million remaining over the next 10 years following his trade to the Yankees. They can not wait for Harper to make his decision - which many in the industry believe will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month - and miss out on the market.

If Harper signs elsewhere, the Nationals' outfield next season will consist of Juan Soto in left field, Victor Robles in centre and Adam Eaton in right field, with former Gold Glove finalist Michael A. Taylor as a back-up in centre.

"You have an iconic player, " Boras said. "But I'm uncomfortable with the statement that we're a better team without him".

While Harper could be exploring other options, it's still possible he might return to the Nationals.

It's hard to find an executive, scout, or rival agent who doesn't believe that Harper will eventually sign with the Phillies, maybe a month from now when he can drive from his Las Vegas home to Mandalay Bay and make the official announcement himself. Max Scherzer got exactly $30 million.

The Nationals were willing to make a strong commitment.
