Welbeck remained in hospital on Friday after being carried off on a stretcher against Sporting in the Europa League on Thursday night, and was due to have an MRI scan before a final decision is made on whether the striker requires an operation.

"His injury is also [bad] for the mentality of the players because they looked and saw it is a big injury, but when you are playing football and competitive matches it can happen".

Arsenal said in a statement that 27-year-old Welbeck would continue to be assessed.

Arsenal fear Danny Welbeck could miss the remainder of the season following his horrific ankle injury and are primed to enter the transfer market for a replacement, according to reports.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery admitted after the match that Welbeck's injury had been a huge blow to the rest of the team. His deal expires at the end of the season and there is doubt whether he will play for Arsenal again.

Koscielny isn't available for selection just yet as he's still building his fitness in training after recovering from a ruptured Achilles that he suffered back in May of last season but Emery suggested earlier this week the defender may be back in contention later this month.

"Danny remains in hospital and will continue to be assessed".

"A further update will be issued over the next 72 hours", said the club.

Groin injury. Expected to return to full training in November. "The news is that we are going to wait - but we think it's a serious injury".
